Despite a troubled economy, Prairie du Sac, WI based Mueller Sports Medicine reported increased sales of 8% in 2008. Founder and CEO Curt Mueller credits innovation and international expansion for the growth. “We are the only sports medicine company focused on the development of new and innovative products on a continual basis,” Mueller said.
In addition to new products, Mueller points to a commitment to international development. While other companies may be reducing their operations, Mueller opened its wholly-owned subsidiary, Mueller Japan, in 2008. “Our commitment and dedication to international sales has been a real indicator of our success,” Mueller President Brett Mueller explained. “Not only do we have our Japanese company, our products are being distributed in over 52 countries worldwide.” Brett Mueller pointed to a fierce dedication to international business as a sign of the future of Mueller Sports Medicine. “We are an industry leader around the world,” Mueller explains. “In fact, in an effort to lead the way, we are the founding sponsor of the Chinese Athletic Trainers Association.”
While Mueller Sports Medicine experienced success in 2008, they are entering 2009 with caution. “We are confident that business will continue to be strong,” Curt Mueller said, “but we also want to be sure to take the precautions necessary to withstand any negative effect the economy will bring to us.” Curt Mueller lists efforts to reduce inventory levels and a greater attention to budget expenditures as some of the ways the company is preparing for any potential downturn.
“We aren’t recession-proof,” Curt Mueller, says, “But no matter what type of economic climate there is, people are going to continue to stay active. Athletes are going to continue to need braces and supports to protect themselves from injury and people of all ages are going to turn to products like ours to relieve pain and discomfort.”
